Directed by Spike Jonze, the spot was later dubbed “the best rug-pull in advertising history” (Adweek, 2017), playfully suggesting that people have an unnatural attachment to their furniture. It marked IKEA’s arrival in the U.S. and earned both the Cannes Grand Prix and the Grand Clio.
I stumbled upon this gem on my old PowerBook G4. It’s the original storyboard from the IKEA pitch — the one we used to sell the idea and help Crispin Porter + Bogusky win the business.
Let’s just say Mr. Jonze took it from there.
